An Introduction to Chlorella Vulgaris

Commonly known as Chlorella, chlorella vulgaris is a single celled type of green algae. It survives in water purely thanks to photosynthesis, and it needs only carbon dioxide, water and sunlight to survive. Chlorella was first discovered by a German biochemist named Otto Heinrich Warburg, and it has often been cited as a potential food source of the future for people.

Because Chlorella is so easy, and cheap, to grow, it has long been seen as a potential food source. In fact, as far back as the 1940’s and 1950’s, research was being done into the possibility of large-scale production of Chlorella as a possible source of food.

This particularly type of algae contains around 50% protein, which was one of the reasons it first started to interest those looking for new and efficient food sources. Unfortunately, Chlorella proved harder to grow outside of a lab than initially believed, and the project to grow it on a large scale was scrapped.

Chlorella Vulgaris, Nutrition and Health

Because of its extraordinarily high protein content, Chlorella is still seen as a super food. Aside from protein, it also contains vitamins, minerals and fat. Its use in medicine has also been well documented, and it has been shown to reduce tumours in mice, it can help with weight control, and it has been shown to be effective in boosting immune function, among other medical uses.

Among these are reducing cholesterol and lowering blood pressure – two major problems in the developed world. Interestingly enough, it has also been shown to be useful in breast-feeding, as it reduces dioxin levels in milk, and can help to increase breast milk production. Unlike some forms of algae, like Spirulina, for instance, the full potential of Chlorella has not yet been tapped, although it is growing in popularity, and the demand for products containing this super food are increasing.

Where to Get Chlorella Vulgaris

Whether you are interested in Chlorella for its protein content, for its medicinal properties, or for any other reason, the best place to look is in your nearest health food store. Try to find chlorella products that are as unprocessed and refined as possible, however, as processing tends to lessen its nutritional value.

I would like to say that having suffered from CFS (Chronic fatigue syndrome) for most of my life, taking Chlorella along with Cilantro has enabled my body to overcome this disabling condition and as a consequence of this I am now able to lead a fairly active, healthy and enjoyable lifestyle.
